Justice
Aryn served as the President (2015-16) and Political Action Chair (2014-15) of the Black Student Alliance at the University of Virginia. In these roles, she organized rallies and marches against police brutality and media misrepresentation, as well as community-wide events to discuss possible solutions to the problem in our area. In March of 2015, police brutality made itself a visible issue at the University of Virginia when Martese Johnson was violently arrested by Alcohol Beverage Control Officers for an alleged fake ID. Following his arrest, Aryn, along with various members of the Black Student Alliance, Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy, and the wider University community organized rallies, town halls, and community-building gatherings as a response. These actions culminated in Towards A Better University, a 26-page document outlining issues facing Black students and Black people at U.Va. and in Charlottesville, and recommendations for addressing these problems. Many of the recommendations made in TABU have since been implemented. Additionally, in the spring of 2015 Aryn served on the Public Safety and Homeland Security Technologies Sub-Panel.
Writing
Aryn has always loved to write. From speeches, opinion pieces, to articles, to poetry, to music, writing is something about which she is very passionate. In her spare time, she puts long hours watching television dramas and sitcoms to good use and trying her hand at television scriptwriting.
Music
Music was Aryn's first love. She grew up in a musical family where the Motown Sound was second nature. Since she was a young child, she has loved to sing and write. Aryn plays the guitar, piano, and writes lyrics to her songs. At the University of Virginia, Aryn has been involved in musical groups such as ORecords and Black Voices Gospel Choir.
